Members of the Adventuring Guild gathered in a busy dockside tavern to investigate the disappearance of the merchant ship Jade Lion. Sailors packed nearly every table, speaking in hushed voices between nervous glances toward the harbor. Rumors drifted through the room like smoke. Some spoke of living waves. Others swore enormous serpents had been spotted offshore. A few insisted the sea itself had become angry. The stories sounded increasingly outrageous with every retelling.
Before the adventurers could sort truth from exaggeration, a disturbance erupted near the entrance. Several sailors dragged in a frightened, half-delirious man who looked as though he had narrowly escaped death. Once the man, a sailor from the Jade Lion, recovered enough to speak, his tale only deepened the mystery. He muttered about terrible eyes staring from beneath the waves and spoke of barely escaping some impossibly dangerous presence in the sea.
The group then left to meet with Benji Frogwater, the merchant owner of the Jade Lion. He eagerly shared everything he knew and offered both payment and additional rewards if his crew and cargo could be recovered safely. He recommended they seek out Captain Sheila Coppertree of the Annabellee to obtain passage to the lighthouse.
After securing passage with Captain Sheila, a band of pirates arrived demanding payment from the captain before they could leave. What followed was a fast-paced dockside brawl featuring Dravenn's precise strikes, Maerith's divine magic, and Zataz's increasingly explosive spellcasting. The fight ended decisively when a well-placed Fireball sent the remaining thugs fleeing for their lives, though not before setting nearby supplies ablaze. It also enabled Zataz to animate two zombie companions, Crispy and Crispier, to join the party.
The voyage to Skyhorn Lighthouse began peacefully enough, but as the lighthouse came into view, disaster struck. A massive wave slammed into the ship, knocking sailors and adventurers alike from their feet as a living pillar of water rose into the air, bent on destroying the vessel.
A fierce battle erupted across the rain-soaked deck as the heroes fought the animated wave. Spells, arrows, and steel gradually wore down the elemental threat. The battle finally ended when Dravenn landed the decisive blow, reducing the creature to nothing more than a harmless puddle. Victorious but exhausted, they pulled into dock at Skyhorn Lighthouse to rest for the night.
Morning brought cold winds, thick fog, and crashing surf as the party prepared to continue their investigation. Josh, having finally recovered from a miserable combination of heavy drinking and severe seasickness during the voyage, joined the others as they approached the lighthouse itself. Perched atop a rocky island and accessible only by slippery switchback stairs, the lighthouse loomed over them through the mist like a lonely sentinel.
After passing through a squealing iron gate and receiving no answer to repeated knocks, the group forced their way inside. The mystery of the silent lighthouse was immediately answered as hostile eel-like humanoids surged from within. Zataz responded in his preferred fashion, hurling a devastating Fireball into the room that left most of the creatures badly scorched and the interior of the lighthouse smoldering.
The ensuing battle showcased the party's strengths. Josh unleashed a flurry of elemental strikes, battering foes with thunderous blows and bursts of acid and frost. Zataz's dark magic claimed additional victims while Maerith's radiant divine power burned through the enemy ranks. Though several eelfolk were defeated, a handful escaped deeper into the lighthouse.
Never one to waste useful resources, Zataz raised two of the fallen eelfolk as skeletal servants named Fishy and Slimy. Maerith, meanwhile, ensured the remaining corpses would stay dead, continuing the increasingly familiar tension between the cleric's respect for the natural order and the wizard's enthusiasm for expanding his undead workforce. Thankfully, while much of the room suffered smoke and fire damage, the sturdy stone lighthouse appeared in no danger of collapse.
Exploring the lower level revealed signs that the lighthouse had been thoroughly ransacked. Supplies lay scattered across storage rooms, with spoiled food and abandoned sailing equipment littering the floor. Dravenn finally rejoined the group after spotting smoke from the battle while still aboard the ship and managed to recover a modest sum from the charred remains.
Investigation of a second room uncovered more surviving eelfolk who had barricaded themselves inside. Unable to communicate with the creatures despite magical assistance, the party chose not to force the confrontation and instead pressed onward. Leaving undead guards behind to watch the lower level, they climbed the winding staircase toward the top of the lighthouse.
There they finally met Lucien, the lighthouse keeper and one of the few remaining occupants. He revealed that the eelfolk had seized control of caves beneath the lighthouse and were apparently seeking to use a magical bowl capable of summoning water elementals. The revelation offered a likely explanation for the living wave that had attacked the Annabellee. After taking a brief rest and making preparations, the adventurers descended into the caverns below.
The caves proved every bit as treacherous as expected. Wet stone, darkness, and deep pools of seawater slowed their progress as Josh led the way. While Dravenn remained behind to guard the lighthouse and keep watch alongside Lucien, the others ventured onward with the aid of Zataz's magic and undead entourage.
Crossing the flooded tunnels presented its own challenges. Maerith used misty step to reach the distant sandbar while the remainder of the group swam through the frigid waters. Zataz's skeletal servants simply trudged along underwater on the cavern floor.
The crossing nearly turned deadly when a pack of bloodthirsty sharks emerged from the darkness. Drawn to easy prey, the predators descended upon Crispy and Crispier, tearing the zombie companions apart in a frenzy. Their sacrifice bought valuable time, allowing the rest of the party to reach the shore largely unharmed. With the threat momentarily behind them and the mysteries of the caverns still ahead, the adventurers pressed deeper into the darkness in search of the truth behind the Jade Lion's disappearance.
